The Tao is called the Great Mother
empty yet inexhaustible,
it gives birth to infinite worlds.
It is always present within you.
You can use it anyway you want.
This passage is from Stephen Mitchell's translation of Lao-tzu's classic text the Tao Te Ching or The Way and Its Power, a cornerstone of the philosophical and religious tradition known as Taoism. These writings reach across time and speak to us with lyrical, mystical, and down-to-earth wisdom and counsel.
The Tao is always present with us, and we can use it anyway we want. Such openness is what makes the Way so appealing to people, no matter what their religious beliefs. This path offers a unique blend of simplicity, poetic beauty, and philosophical profundity.
In this e-course, we will use different translations of the Tao Te Ching, including some pop culture manifestations, as launch pads for inner and outer explorations. We will also introduce you to writers and commentators associated with this tradition. Forty daily emails will each include a brief passage from a Taoist source and a related practice suggestion.
We will not offer a historical perspective on Taoism or attempt to compare it to other religions. Rather, we will seek to discover how its insights and advice can enlighten everyday situations we find ourselves in, challenge us to question our standard operating procedures, expand our perceptions, and enable us to better discern the impact of our decisions on those around us. We see it as a way to spiritual self-cultivation as we attune to our true nature and deepen our humanity in these tense and perilous times.
Practicing Spirituality with Taoists is recommended for all those who want to achieve a mellow mind, a more balanced life, a deeper appreciation of their place in nature, a way of not forcing things, and a means of tapping into more energy in daily life. It will include tips on being more humble, suggestions for integrating opposites in your life, ideas on practicing simplicity, and examples of how to walk the path of gentleness and flexibility.
