Kim Sungnam (Kim Young-ho-ho) is a Korean painter in his forties who suddenly leaves his wife (Hwang Sujung) and life after almost being arrested for smoking marijuana. He takes up residence in Paris in a small hotel owned by Jang (Ki Joobong). With nothing much to do and not able to speak French, Sungnam is happy when he encounters Jang Min-Sun (Kim Youjin), an old lover. She is now married but has fond memories of their affair. Sensing his friend's restlessness, Jang introduces him to Cho Hyunju (Seo Minjeong), an art student. Although she is attracted to him, he falls for her roommate Lee Yujeong (Park Eunhye). She is a very self-absorbed person who is uneasy around the older Sungnam. At night, he calls his wife and laments their separation.

Night and Day is written and directed by Hong Sangsoo, and it vividly charts the foolish things that individuals do when they are caught in what psychologist Dorothy Tennov has called "limerance" — a form of romantic love characterized by infatuation, an aching of the heart, and a general intensity of feeling that overshadows other concerns or interests. Limerance includes sex but is manifested mainly as mental activity. The use of bits and pieces from Beethoven's Seventh Symphony fits in nicely with the story of Sungnam's emotional journey.

Screened at the 46th New York Film Festival, October 2008.
