Overseas is a totally engrossing French film set in Algeria during the 1950s. Nicole Garcia, Brigitte Rouan, and Marianne Basler are three totally different sisters drawn into close proximity by their life together in an alien land. The eldest struggles with loneliness, her libido, and cancer. The middle sister has no time for herself since she must manage the farm her husband refuses to oversee. And the youngest tries to set herself apart from the other two by a secret affair with an Algerian. Director Brigitte Rouan covers the same incidents in their lives from the perspective of each sister. This unique cinematic approach is both edifying and illuminating as to their characters.
