Philip De Broca's Dear Detective is a French comedy with nothing on its mind but causing delight. Annie Girardot is featured as a no-nonsense lady cop who faces double trouble: the male chauvinism of her co-workers and the anti-police prejudice of an old flame (Philippe Noiret) who reappears in her life. Girardot and Noiret make a likeable twosome as they try to work out their differences. He goes in for stylish dinners, singing in oratorios, and teaching Greek; she is busy trying to come to terms with her repressed femininity while seeking stature in her profession by solving a series of crimes against French politicians. De Broca blends murder mystery with romance and comes up with a successful and witty mix.
