In Old World Christian countries, noon was the classic time to pray the Angelus, a prayer of adoration in celebration of the Incarnation of Christ. The Angelus bells would ring at noon across town and cities. People would stop whatever they were doing, stand, turn to the sound of the bells and observe a minute of silent prayer.
