[St.] Wiaux made a practice to go about his day in a gentle and forgiving way that would not hurt others. Often we do hurt others because we are unthinking, pre-occupied, or distracted. We are simply not aware that what we do — even if it is morally right — may hurt someone else in some way or other.

As a spiritual practice, remind yourself during the course of the day that everyone you see is struggling with some inner battle, self-doubt, worry, or physical pain, whether it shows or not. Whenever someone around you expresses his or her suffering in some way, say a brief prayer for the person, and visualize him or her in a peaceful state of happiness or contentment. Make the visual image very graphic; for example, see the person lying on a sunny beach, eating ice cream, laughing at a good joke, being embraced by a loved one, or just running through a meadow of flowers singing a favorite song. The energy you put into this practice will make an impact on the person, often immediately. Watch for it.
