In our retreats, we break into groups and ask each person to talk about his or her disappointments, anger, fears, and anxiety. While that person talks, the others are asked to simply listen. Truly listen. We ask the listeners to metaphorically put their heads on the speaker's chest and sink into what is being said. It is astonishing what honest expression of feelings and true listening from the heart can do for healing and hope. We advise our participants to create time in their schedules to regularly gather in circles of love and participate in this process.

Walking This Practice into the World

Identify one or more people in your life whom you feel close to, whom you trust, and who love the truth. Gather regularly with this circle of love, every two weeks or monthly, to participate in this practice of taking turns to express feelings and listen.

If you have difficulty connecting with such a circle, create an "inner circle of love" …in the imaginal realm. In your meditative state, express your feelings as fully as possible to members of your inner circle. Know that they receive your expressions of anger and disappointment with tender affection and understanding. When it comes time to practice listening, touch your heart and listen to the rhythm of your heart. The sages say that there is a voice that doesn't use words. Just listen.

By doing this exercise, you will feel unburdened, with a greater capacity to experience joy.
