Eventually I realized that the Sufi chant "Toward the One" was an excellent accompaniment to speed work [running sprints]. The breathing pattern I use while sprinting is as follows: "To (inhale), ward (exhale), the (inhale), One (exhale)." The syllables are short, corresponding with the rapid breathing required when sprinting. Moreover, the imagery of moving "toward the One," toward a finish line that is within reach, is an image that lends itself to short bursts of speed....
I have also found that chanting a short, fast-paced "Godspeed" mantra helps to recover momentum when I have grown tired. I chant "God-speed" -- hearing "God" on the inhale and "speed" on the exhale. Awareness of the symbolism of taking in God with the breath and then letting the breath go with speed helps propel me along.
