In illuminated manuscripts and other books of beauty, it is impossible to separate art, religion, and magic, for all three work together to make their ordinary acts — reading and writing — truly enchanting. Maybe if we could realize again that books are primarily objects of magic, and only secondarily sources of instruction and ideas, we might manufacture them differently and allow them to make their considerable contribution to the re-enchantment of everyday life.
