Guantanamera! is set in economically depressed contemporary Cuba and directed by the late Tomas Gutierrez Alia and Juan Carlos Tabio (Strawberry and Chocolate). Aunt Yoyita returns to the town where she grew up and meets with her niece Georgina, a former economics professor who's married to Adolfo, an unhappy civil servant. Yoyita's emotional reunion with Candido, her sweetheart of 50 years ago, results in a fatal heart attack. Looking for a way to earn national recognition, Adolfo has come up with a gasoline-saving plan that requires all Cuban towns to share in the financial burden of transporting corpses to their burial destinations. This procedure leads to incredible bureaucratic troubles as Adolfo, Georgina, and Candido accompany Yoyita's body on its way to burial in Havana.

Guantanamera! is a funny road movie filled with colorful characters and a lively musical soundtrack. Mirtha Ibarra gives a fine performance as Georgina, a dutiful wife who by chance keeps meeting up with Mariano, a former student of hers who is a truck driver. She learns from Candido that in love you have to cast reason aside and follow the imperatives of the heart.
