Secret agent Roy Miller (Tom Cruise) is in the Wichita, Kansas, airport trying to figure out how to have someone else serve as a mule for him in transporting a super-dupper energy device onto a plane. He chooses June Havens (Cameron Diaz), a working-class woman who hasn't traveled much and loves to restore old cars. Roy sweet-talks her, and she flirts with him. While she is in the plane's restroom, he slays a handful of enemies who are trying to get their hands on the energy device. June is terrified when she sees what has happened and even more frightened when Roy is forced to land the plane in a cornfield.

Who are the villains chasing this lethal CIA agent? Fitzgerald (Peter Sarsgaard) is an agency boss who sees Roy as a rogue agent trying to make a quick buck, as does CIA Director Isabel George (Viola Davis). Also in pursuit is Antonio Quintana (Jordi Molla), an international arms dealer. They want not only the energy device but Simon Feck (Paul Dano), the brilliant young man who invented it. June finds herself attracted to the dangers Roy faces, and this fascination takes her around the world with him from Boston to Austria to the running of the bulls in Seville, Spain, to the Caribbean. Midway though their escapades, they bond with each other and share many a successful escape from death and destruction.

James Mangold (Walk the Line) directs this cinematic blend of action drama, romantic comedy, and globe-hopping espionage tale. Tom Cruise seems to be having fun with this role of the courteous agent who is very adept at escaping the traps set for him. Cameron Diaz is spunky and funny as the Midwestern woman who explores a brave new world that calls out qualities within herself she never knew existed. There are far too many crash sequences and extended shoot-outs but Knight and Day turns the corner and leaves these behind as it hurtles its way to a satisfying finale.
