Film Review

By Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat

Bob Roberts
Directed by Tim Robbins
Artisan Entertainment 09/92 DVD/VHS Feature Film
R - momentary language

This thought-provoking drama is a snappy political satire about a 1990 Pennsylvania race for the U.S. Senate.

Tim Robbins stars as a right-wing, folk-singing millionaire who has risen to popularity with such songs as "The Times Are Changin' Back" and "This Land Belongs To Me." A documentary filmmaker captures his sound-bite campaign against a liberal incumbent (Gore Vidal).

With its stinging critique of political chicanery, phony populism, dirty tricks, and media manipulation, this film reveals some of the reasons why politics in America has been drained of so much meaning and purpose.
