In 1817, Colonel Chabert, a wealthy and powerful French soldier who was assumed to have died in the Battle of Eylan, returns to Paris. He wants to reclaim his wife, his title, and his fortune. But it seems as if his life and accomplishments have been erased.

In another touching performance, Gerard Depardieu stars in Colonel Chabert as this cunning, persistent, and vulnerable man who has endured ignominies abroad in foreign prisons and madhouses. All he wants is what is due him, but the world has changed and his values are now obsolete.

His ex-wife has remarried and refuses to take seriously his claim that he is Colonel Chabert. However, she changes her mind when he hires Derville, a brilliant and meticulous lawyer, to represent him. Chabert's quest to re-establish his identity compels him to do some serious soul-searching. Yves Angelo, in his directorial debut, does a masterful job orchestrating this thought-provoking psychological thriller.
