Film ReviewBy Frederic and Mary Ann BrussatGeronimo: An American Legend Directed by Walter Hill Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment 10/93 DVD/VHS Feature Film PG- 13 - frontier violence Wes Studi stars as the renegade Apache warrior who eluded the U.S. Army for a year before he finally surrendered in 1886. This sober-minded film, directed by Walter Hill, focuses upon the mediation efforts of U.S. Cavalry Lieutenant Charles Gatewood (Jason Patric), the man assigned to convince Geronimo to surrender. This soft-spoken Southerner has great respect for the Native American way of life. His cross-cultural perspective is contrasted with the gung ho militarism of his superior, a man convinced that these savages must step aside for the white expansion of the West. Sad for America that there weren't more Gatewoods in U.S. military history. Reviews and database copyright © 1970 – 2009 by Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat |
