Here is a madcap romantic comedy that offers a few new twists on the ancient idea that fate intervenes in people's lives to bring them together with their soul mates. When Robert (Ewan McGregor), a janitor, is replaced by a robot, he decides to take out his anger on his wealthy boss (Ian Holm). Instead he kidnaps Celine (Cameron Diaz), the boss's smart, sassy, and rebellious daughter. They head out to Utah pursued by two bounty hunters (Holly Hunter and Delroy Lindo). Unbeknownst to anyone except their boss Gabriel (Dan Hedaya), the latter are angels sent to earth as celestial matchmakers for Robert and Celine. Although the kind-hearted janitor and the spoiled rich girl are worlds apart, they draw closer on the road while facing a series of wacky obstacles.
Danny Boyle directs this zany comedy with panache. It will make perfect sense to those who believe that true love is inexplicable, unpredictable, and absolutely beyond control.
