Spiritual power does not flex any muscles or display pride. Its strength is found in the moments when we are gentle with one another. We appreciate how fragile our condition truly is and we gain a new respect for the temporariness of all our relationships. When you are with your child and fully realize that the particular moment will never be repeated again, you are drawn into a more sacred and gentle presence.

Gentleness values the softly spoken word, the tender touch, the warm embrace, and the kind, approving gesture. When we are in the presence of holy people, it is the power of their gentleness that moves us the most. Their quiet way of being deeply present with others outweighs all of the words of wisdom they may speak and all the cleverness, creativity, and magic that may take place around them. It is their consideration of others that brings forth their fullest presence.

The world needs more gentlewomen and gentlemen. Practice being more gentle in all that you do. Begin the practice of gently stroking the palm of each hand with your fingertips when you wake up in the morning and when you retire in the evening. Do this as lightly, calmly, and gently as you can. See your life as residing in between these rituals of gentleness that take place each morning and evening. If you need more kindness in the course of your day, find a way to gently stroke your palms again. This will help introduce gentleness into your consciousness.
