The Magi in the Christmas story can serve as a kind of metaphor in this regard: their astrological calculations pointed beyond themselves to a greater Sign from the heavens; the spiritual yearnings that drew them into the occult could be satisfied only by the One who passed through the heavens to identify with our deepest desires.
