Religious Education for Edification

Spirituality & Practice is an online resource offering religious education and coverage of the contemporary spiritual renaissance from the authors of Spiritual Literacy: Reading the Sacred in Everyday Life, Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat. Instead of focusing on the schism among different religions, the book introduced the concept of the Alphabet of Spiritual Literacy, covering 37 spiritual practices common to the world’s religions. By finding the common ground in different religions, Spirituality & Practice’s founders hope to offer resources for spiritual seekers of all stripes, focusing on the practices that lead to spiritual edification.

The site is a unique mix of religious education and up-to-date cultural commentary, finding the spiritual in the everyday goings-on of the world with news items, spirituality in current film releases, and by providing books and audio books for those seeking something more. The site also has an ongoing Spiritual Literacy Project, helping seekers to read the sacred in everyday life—this is now available in a six-DVD set.

The Alphabet of Spiritual Literacy

One of the main backbones of the Spirituality & Practice website is the Alphabet of Spiritual Literacy first introduced in the Brussats’ book, Spiritual Literacy: Reading the Sacred in Everyday Life. Included are concepts many would expect: love, justice, kindness, faith, and grace; but not everything is so obvious. For example, the Brussats outline the practice of Being Present:

“Live in the present moment. Don’t obsess about the past or worry about the future. All you need is right here now.”

Explore the website to see more practices and how you can bring them into your everyday life and become more spiritual in your search for that greater truth. You may also follow the site’s creators on Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube, and interact accordingly. Religious education is not a passive practice; get involved today.
