Kornfield discusses the Buddha's experiential teachings and practices for dealing with suffering, achieving contentment, and being free. We have to begin with an appreciation for our own and others' innate nobility. Kornfield also talks abouat compassion and the study of consciousness. In a challenging section, he explains unhealthy mental states (grasping, aversion, and delusion) and healthy mental states (wisdom, love, and generosity). He salutes the liberating power of mindfulness and RAIN (Recognition, Acceptance, Investigation, and Non-Identification) of our emotions. This is followed by a fascinating delineation of Buddhist personality types.
