In this book, John Tully Carmody, Senior Research Fellow in Religion at Santa Clara University, presents the bittersweet essence of the last four years of his life. Throughout this period, he valiantly lived with multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer of the bone marrow. Carmody fashioned psalms about suffering, pain, time, and hope. These poetic passages are spiked with the crisp honesty that comes late at night when one is alone with God. Carmody's illness teaches him about others. For instance, "Until I was bone weary my heart seldom went out to street people, mothers or clerks." He comes to cherish the prayers of others said on his behalf. Also included are fifteen letters sent to family and friends. John Carmody died in September of 1995.
