This wonderful resource gives ideas and instructions for using Rabbi Sandy Eisenberg Sasso's classic children's book God's Paintbrush in religious education settings. Multicultural, nondenominational, and nonsectarian, it is result of more than 10 years of testing and has been endorsed by Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish Religious Leaders.

The program is divided into five sessions, each keyed to Scripture references and spreads in the illustrated book: What Is God Like? Seeing, Hearing and Speaking, Touching, and Doing. Full-color activity sheets (sets of eight with additional sets available for purchase separately) have reproductions of some of the pictures in the book along with activity suggestions and areas for children to write their responses to questions. For example, in the unit on seeing, children are encouraged to look at God's creation in different ways — using a magnifying glass, a telescope, a kaleidoscope, etc. — and to note what new things they notice. The accompanying writing exercise is: If I saw the world through God's eyes, I would see . . .

Since some of the activities are designed to be done outdoors or involve crafts and games, this kit could be the basis of a program at vacation Bible school, Sabbath morning children's service, Sunday school, or a day-long or weekend retreat. Parents will also find many good ideas here for talking to children about God and spirituality.
