Sr. Mary Margaret Funk is a long-time friend of Contemplative Outreach and a vibrant example of the contemplative life. She is profiled in S&P's Living Spiritual Teachers Project. Author of many books, most notably, the "Matter Series," which includes Discernment Matters: Listening with the Ear of the Heart, Thoughts Matter, and Lectio Matters. Sr. Meg is a practical witness and teacher of tools to live in and from Christ within in all aspects of life. Video excerpts of an unpublished talk she gave on Discernment Matters will be used as the foundation for this course to explore the contemplative approach to discerning the small and large decisions in life.
Discernment means sorting our thoughts and following the impulse of grace given by the Holy Spirit. As Sr. Meg writes, "Since we are not our thoughts, we can observe them rising and follow the ones that are from God." This is a way of coming more awake and discovering the spark of divinity burning in our hearts.
The course will have a strong emphasis on practice. It will consist of a combination of email and video teachings, as well as the opportunity to share and connect with others in the online Practice Circle. You can expect:
- Email teachings sent on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays
- Mini-practices to root a practice of contemplative discernment in your own life.
- Three short videos during the first week of the course and one each week after that.
- An invitation to participate in a Practice Circle available 24/7 where you can share responses and experiences with others from our worldwide community and receive further guidance from course presenters.
(4 CEHs for Chaplains available.)
