The Sum of Us is an Australian film directed by Kevin Dowling and Geoff Burton and adapted for the screen from a 1991 play by David Stevens.

Harry is a widower who lives in a house in Sydney with his homosexual son Jeff. Harry's mother thrived in a lesbian relationship for years after his father died. His acceptance and understanding of Jeff's sexual orientation startles the woman he meets through a computer dating service. And Harry's friendliness even sends one of Jeff's lovers fleeing. Despite the ups and downs of their relationships with others, these two remain devoted to each other.

The film is buoyed up by the convivial performances of Jack Thompson and Russell Crowe. At one point, Harry's mother says, "The greatest explorers are the explorers of the human heart." Right. This film plumbs the depths of a loyal and loving relationship between a father and son.
