We are huge fans of Richard Linklater's films especially Boyhood. But this one is a tedious joyride. It's populated by a large cast of young actors playing a band of horny college baseball players who see themselves as winners in the things that count for them: triumphing in competitive games, drinking as much as they can and then being as stupid as they can, picking up women and bedding them with no feelings attached, ridiculing and harassing freshmen players, especially pitchers, and showing disrespect for their coach by breaking every one of his rules.

At the hub of this revved-up comedy is Jake (Blake Jenner from the TV series Glee) who arrives as a freshman at a fictional Texas college the weekend before classes start. He moves into the house for the baseball team. He tries hard to fit in and walk the line between the critical and totally obnoxious leaders (Glenn Powell, Ryan Guzman) of the pack and the obvious losers who include a prissy country hick (Will Brittain), a stoner (Wyatt Russell), and a crazy fellow (Juston Street) with serious anger-management problems. Even though he often sides with the hot-shots, writer and director Linklater rewards him for his good behavior by having him have sex with Beverly (Zoey Deutch), a fine arts major with her own airs of being special.

The film ends with our hero asleep on his desk during his first college class. Feeling drained by all the frenzied weekend activity, we wanted to join him in blissful sleep.
