Voyager is a mesmerizing screen interpretation of a Max Frisch novel directed by Volker Schlondorff. Sam Shepard, in his best performance in years, plays a world-weary engineer who travels the globe in order to avoid any entangling relationships. Yet on one of his trips, he learns by chance of the fate of the first woman (Barbara Sukowa) he loved and deserted. Then on an ocean voyage, he meets Sabeth (Julie Delpy), an alluring young woman who desperately tries to thaw this ice man who refuses to acknowledge the value of feelings, dreams, and emotions. Voyager impresses with its top-drawer performances, its globe-trotting sophistication, and its literary treatment of fate.
