Writer and director Jean-Jacques Beineix (Diva, The Moon in the Gutter) has created a melodramatic movie which centers on the difficulty of living with a sexually uninhibited free spirit. Betty (Beatrice Dalle), a waitress, moves in with Zorg (Jean-Hughes Anglade), a handyman. Although their libidinous appreciation for each other knows no limits, she seems to need something more. When Betty learns that Zorg has written a novel, she reads it and decides it's a masterpiece. However, her attempts to get the book published fail. When Betty's own creation — a baby — dies, she goes batty.

This French film vividly demonstrates the non-stop stress of living with a wild one. Betty's violence and temper tantrums signal a deeply troubled person. But the couple's isolation from others is part of their attraction to each other. The other notable aspect of Betty Blue is that the film has pioneered a relaxed treatment of male frontal nudity. The DVD presents the unrated Director's Cut.
