Depression in its many manifestations — sadness, withdrawal, heaviness, dispiritedness, and loneliness — forces a person into solitude and away from the pursuit of happiness. Some traditions suggest that when depressed we might deepen the depression and give its gray or dark colors a place in ordinary living. Instead of curing depression, we might realign our lives for the better by following the lead of the depressive qualities. We could find ways to give solitude and withdrawal a place in lives that are usually full of events, people, and activities.
