For strength, Doris drinks from hope. I am not talking here about the Christian hope of heaven. She takes heavenly hope in good faith, even though she evinces no fierce desire to get there soon. The hope I admire in Doris has the shape of courage to walk straight into trouble with eyes wide open right here on earth. No matter how miserable things get, she believes that they can get better, and because she has hope, she is willing to live with them until they do get better.
