Creating is a participation mystique of many things. Yet we still think of creation as something that comes almost exclusively from within the artist. In my experience it is the other way around. The fertile creator is the one who is sensitive to the expressions and suggestive spirits of environments, things, gestures, relationships, and events. The idea that the creative spirit is within us may be the most restrictive notion of all, because it discourages bold and inquisitive relations with the material world.
