“I am of the belief that people who complain of boredom are, in fact, boring. What is boredom? Well, for one thing, it’s an unpleasant emotional experience. But why? Though boredom is experienced by all and is normal, people who are easily bored are often prone to anxiety and depression and can exhibit what are called approach-avoidance behaviors.

“When you are bored, novelty-focused areas of the brain are dormant. You’re not engaged with the outside world in a manner that produces dopamine and norepinephrine, two major stimulatory neurotransmitters involved in attention and reward. When you’re not engaged, a signal in the brain goes down and noise increases. This is why some people become agitated when determined to sleep or meditate. Suddenly our mind and body experiences sensations, emotions, and self-talk that make our skin crawl. Once we engage verbally with another person, these experiences seem to disappear.”
