“If you feel at a loss or uncertain how to reply when someone asks ‘What happened?’ or ‘How are you?’ here are a few of my favorites to get you started:

  • ‘Thank you for asking, but I am not really able to talk about it right now.’
  • ‘Honestly, it’s been really fucking hard. I am not doing well and I really can use some extra support from you to get through this.’
  • ‘I’m grateful for any support at this time. It’s a roller coaster and every day feels like a whole range of emotions.’
  • ‘At this moment, I am [fill in the blank], but it changes.’
