There are many books for adults explaining the Jewish holiday of Passover. This exquisite children's book by Harriet Ziefert is aimed at boys and girls from four through eight years of age. She explains the historical roots of the exodus from Egypt with Moses and God playing the largest roles in the drama of moving from slavery to freedom. These accounts are greatly enhanced by the colorful and painterly illustrations by Karla Gudeon. Together, Ziefert and Gudeon enable us to see and to sense the immense beauty that animates the remembrance of the past and the sacredness of the present seder meal. There is beauty in the courage of Moses and in the Kiddush cup and in the glowing candles. All these earthy elements combine to reveal the sacred mystery of liberation which is the hope of people of all religions around the world.
