Burton L. Visotzky, director of the Louis Finkelstein Institute for Religious and Social Studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary, outlines a variety of ways to interpret Scripture in this book. The author, who plays a major role in the PBS series "Genesis: A Living Conversation with Bill Moyers," agrees with the sage Ben Bag Bag who said of Biblical exegesis, "Turn it, turn it, round and round/In it all things can be found." That is exactly what ancient rabbis have done with midrash studies. Visotzky looks at some of their interpretations of Genesis as they discuss creation, faith, sexuality, sibling rivalry, and theodicy. The author salutes communal study and dialogue organized around Biblical texts as spiritual adventures of significance and meaning.
