This paperback is a sequel to the earlier collection of annual Dharma Celebration teachings called Live in A Better Way. Renuka Singh is the editor of these five lectures which were all delivered from 1999 onward (with the exception of "The Four Noble Truths and the Eight Verses of Thought Transformation"). According to the Dalai Lama, meditation and other spiritual practices are among the many ways to nirvana, or the passage beyond sorrow. One of the major challenges in life is to train the mind, and Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism all emphasize how important it is to do this. The Dalai Lama is convinced that all major religions "carry the message about love, compassion, forgiveness, contentment, and self-discipline." Given the violence, tension, and stress of our times, it is crucial that we develop these habits and positive qualities of mind. In his lectures on "The Four Seals in Buddhism," "Overcoming Negative Emotions," "Self-Development through the Six Perfections," and "Cultivating Equanimity," the Dalai Lama addresses the wisdom that Buddhism has to offer thinking people. Some of the most interesting observations he makes are on his pilgrimages to the holy places of different religious traditions, three ways to counteract negative emotions, the significance of intelligence in Buddhism, and the development of wise selfishness. These lectures demonstrate the breadth and depth of wisdom the Dalai Lama has to share with the world.
