The Desert Mothers and Fathers, who lived mostly in silence yet were known for their profound wisdom, were often asked by seekers, "Give us a word." Their responses filled the hearts of those who sought strength and succor from them. In their honor, we are starting a new series — "Wisdom Programs" — in which each day you receive a sage quotation and an opportunity to reflect on its meaning to you.

We begin with the seasons of Advent and Christmas, which offer us ample opportunities to embrace four spiritual practices: waiting, patience, hope, and joy. These are wise teachers, but they come to us during the rush and clamor of the holiday season, a time when many of us are overwhelmed with obligations and extra work.

Instead of caving in to the stress of the holidays, let us stop briefly during Advent and the twelve days of Christmas to refresh our mind, body, and soul with inspirational quotations. Just like the ancient magi in Jesus' time — who were warned in a dream to "go home by another way," avoiding King Herod's wiles — we can let these practices show us an alternative path through the season.

When you sign up for this e-course, you will receive:

  • An inspirational quotation on waiting, patience, hope, or joy every day during Advent and the twelve days of Christmas.
  • A link to our review of the book where we found the quote.
  • An accompanying reflective reading practice (akin to Lectio Divina).

May Advent and Christmas be a pure and holy joy for you and your loved ones!
