Lee Isaac Chung directs this sequel to Twister (1996) which revolves around several groups of storm chasers caught up in a tornado outbreak in Oklahoma. In the opening sequence, Kate Carter (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a meteorologist, and her team, including Javi (Anthony Ramos), are in the field where they want to see if by releasing small beads into a tornado, they can lesson its intensity. When the experiment goes horribly wrong, Kate retreats back to her laboratory, giving up storm chasing.
Meanwhile, Ravi goes to work with a company scanning tornados; he convinces Kate to join them. This time the scientists find themselves competing with other storm chasers, including YouTube storm chaser Tyler Owens (Glenn Powell), known as the "Tornado Wrangler.”
Have you ever found yourself yelling in a theater (silently) or in your living room (loudly) watching characters or real-life YouTube stars taking incredible risks with dangerous weather patterns. We have. “Are you nuts?” one of us will ask. Or “That's not a very good idea!" You will have plenty of opportunities for such outbursts in this thriller! And you may also find yourself asking what is behind this kind of activity. We were curious too, so we did a little research.
- Storm chasers may be doing it for scientific research. Like the characters in this movie, they may be looking for a way to tame a violent storm or tornado to save lives and property. These are results they can’t simulate in the laboratory.
- If I can get so excited watching storm chasing, I’m sure that the thrill of the chase is an important motivation. It’s a way to get an adrenaline rush.
- Storm chasing is not a solitary sport. It requires working together with others, sharing information, and being on hand in an emergency. It builds camaraderie with a team who have the same interests.
Even when a storm is life-threatening, there is something truly awesome and beautiful about it. While I still would not want to get too close, I do appreciate seeing these wonders of nature from a distance.
