In the Judeo-Christian tradition, God is often imaged as a wise old man. The wise elder appears as the "sage" or "master" in Taoism and Confucianism. The "crone" or "wise woman" is a recurring figure in Goddess traditions. Wisdom was particularly associated with postmenopausal women; their supposedly retained menstrual blood, described as "wise blood," was considered to be a source of their insight.

How can we understand, in modern terms, the association of age and wisdom? For one thing, age is an adding on.
