Earlier peoples who experienced soul in inorganic as well as organic life were acutely attuned to the way objects transmit forces. Talismans and charms permeated every aspect of their daily lives. Even if we don't believe in the magical powers of things to alter situations, we can look at these practices as an extension of a world-view in which physical things have spirits that affect people. Careful attention is given to touching or wearing the amulet in the right way. The things of the world are rarely taken for granted.
