Sister Wendy Beckett became a nun at the age of 16, lived for nearly 20 years as a hermit, and then became known all over the world as "the art nun" thanks to her popular television programs and writing about artists, paintings, and their multiple meanings. She resides as a contemplative nun within the grounds of a Carmelite monastery in Norfolk, England. Among her 20 books are Real Presence: In Search of the Earliest Icons and Sister Wendy's Bible Treasury.

Most of the letters in this collection are to Ann, a religious Sister with positions of authority in her order. Sister Wendy responds to her questions, listens to her spiritual searching, and comes across in these missives as a sensitive and engaging spiritual director. We were pleased to see references to various artists and their works. Best of all is Sister Wendy ranking Klee and Matisse as two of her favorites. They are ours too.
