In the foreword to this book, Christopher de Vinck notes that spiritual writer Henri J. M. Nouwen always was concerned with two central questions: "How do we maintain the fire within us? How do we tend to the hope of self in the face of our lost selves?" The answer to both is found on these pages about the love that flows from the heart of Jesus. Nouwen started this exploration when Jean Vanier's mother asked him to write about the Sacred Heart. He ended up writing about the heart of Jesus set against the backdrop of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday.

In the first meditation, Nouwen ponders the depth of love in Jesus' heart for all humankind and how meaningful and restorative knowing this has been in his own life. In the second, he examines the broken heart of Jesus. In the final meditation, Nouwen gives thanks for the wounded heart of Jesus.
