Jude Daly is an internationally acclaimed author and illustrator. In this picture book for children six through ten years of age, she has adapted a Taoist tale called "The Stone Cutter." Sivu is a stonemason who is known for his creative ability to carve extraordinary animals or persons out of stone. He sold whatever he made but never had much money. While doing a statue for a rich businessman's wife, he wishes that he could be the businessman. Presto! His wish is granted and he suddenly has more power and possessions than he could ever imagine. The only problem is that everyone dislikes him. Next, Sivu wishes to be the mayor: people step aside when he passes and his authority is feared — men and women are frightened in his presence. So Sivu wishes again and becomes the sun, then the rain cloud, and then the wind. None of these roles are satisfying so his final wish is to be a big and powerful rock. It is then that he is rocked by a revelation that opens his eyes to the beauty and power of his first creative vocation as a stonemason.

This wonderful Taoist folk tale, adapted for the modern world, is filled with spiritual messages. One is that it is best if we do not compare ourselves to other people. Usually there is little good that can come of it. Second, wealth and power are given high value in Western societies but they cannot match the blessings that come from creativity. God rejoices in all those who choose to follow the lead of their imagination and bring more beauty and wonder into the world.
