In 1921 at age 52, Daisy Bates, an Irish-born governess who had come to Australia in 1883, moved into a tent in the desert to live among the Aboriginals. She left behind one world and crossed the border into another more mysterious realm. This is a creative biography of this strange woman who lived to the ripe old age of 91. Bates filled notebooks with stories, myths, and vocabularies of the Aboriginals. She was disheartened by the way whites treated these indigenous people who possessed so much spiritual wisdom. Blackburn has caught a glimpse of Bates's elusive soul and the character qualities which enabled her to stay in the wilderness for over 50 years with the people she loved.
