The moment you become aware of negative thoughts and feelings, focus your attention to initiate a spiritual intervention. It is paramount to become aware of any unchecked negative imaginary scenarios swirling in our minds, based on thoughts of fear, ignorance, and hate. Intervene immediately. Sufis say, "Tauba! Tauba!" the moment they recognize that this is happening. The word tauba implies forgiveness and the intention to turn to God for help. We may acknowledge the scenario and turn away from it by saying, "Not true! Not true!" or "Not real! Not real!" or "Letting go! Letting go!" This spiritual intervention will break the pattern and, by the grace of God, allow space for beautiful patterns of thoughts and feelings to take root.

Walking This Practice into the World

By the constant practice of compassionate awareness and self-talk, we can diminish our negative thoughts and forestall the creation of imaginary scenarios that are filled with harmful energies. With our minds thus unburdened and cleansed, we greatly decrease the likelihood of dramatic conflict in our lives and we open our hearts to greater hope and joy.
