Angels announce births and attend ascension. Milton says they have to fight and resist with great effort to stay down. They rise, fly, appear in trances, visions and dreams. They lift souls in ecstasy and take up Elijah in his fiery-wheeled chariot. They rise with Jesus (who, tradition says, left his footprint lingering on the hill) and question those left looking up to heaven — gawking — "Why are you looking up to heaven?" Now the Presence resides on earth in the Spirit's children, until the coming of the kingdom.
