A salawat is any prayer for blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad.

  • Performing salawat can be as simple as repeating a phrase like one of the following:

Allahumma salli 'ala sayyidina muhammadin wa alihi sayyidina muhammad
O Allah, send Your blessings on our Master Muhammad and his family and companions

Sallallah ‘ala Muhammad sallallah alay wa sallam
May Allah bless Muhammad and grant him peace

Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad
O Allah, send blessing on Muhammad

Allahumma salli 'ala sayyidina muhammadin wa alihi wa sahbihi wa sallim
O Allah! Send prayers and peace upon our Master Muhammad and his family and his companions

  • Performing salawat can take the form of reciting a prayer based on a hadith (a report or account of the words or deeds of the Prophet Muhammad), such as the following:

Allahumma salli 'ala sayyidina muhammadin wa 'ala ali sayyidina muhammad;
kama salayta 'ala sayyidina ibrahima wa 'ala ali ibrahim;
fil 'alamin innaka hamidun majid
O Allah! Send prayers on our Master Muhammad and upon the family of our Master Muhammad;
just as You prayed upon our Master Ibrahim and upon the family of our Master Ibrahim;
in all the worlds, You are the Praiseworthy, the Glorious!

  • Performing salawat can also take the form of reciting a prayer upon the Prophet from a specific school or order, such as Salat al-Mashishiyya.
