In notes included with this CD, Deva Premal states that while making this album, she and her partner Miten visited the place in India where Krishna was born and kirtan originated. Upon their return, they decided to add jazz textures to the songs under the direction of Danish producer Raj Rishi. Alluding to the title, Premal has observed: "Mantras are passwords that transform the mundane into the sacred."
The path of Krishna devotion resounds with the playfulness of the Leela, and this spirit seems to be present in the eight mantras presented here. For all who are patient and meditative, there is a ten-minute bonus number.
