“Perhaps wealth becomes something good as long as we share it generously. Having savings enables us to support and subsidize others, fund charitable organizations, and finance changes to the systems that are responsible for poverty. Giving money to organizations that help people who are poor — while also dealing with connected issues like immigration, disability, racism, sexism, and so forth — creates a net gain for the world. My concern with this argument (which I use myself!) is the follow-through. Are we actually giving that much away? I can’t claim this defense while hoarding money in my big new barns. I can’t say this and then perpetuate inequality by passing my excess on to family members who don’t need it.”
