Here is a beautifully produced and acted drama set on a farm. Divorcee Min (Meg Tilly) abandons her 11-year-old son Journey (Max Pomeranc) and her daughter Cat (Eliza Dushku) for a life on the open road. She knows they will be taken care of by her responsible father (Jason Robards) and mother (Brenda Flicker).

Using his hobby of photography, the grandfather tries to help his grandson to see that although life is not perfect, it is good enough. The screenplay by Patricia MacLachlan captures and conveys the ways in which family love is spelled out in small acts of attentiveness, caring, and tenderness. A box of torn up pictures, the sudden appearance of a pregnant cat, the arrival of a letter, a misty memory from childhood, and a small hug just when it is needed--these tiny incidents make Journey into a magical movie that speaks profoundly about loss, grief, forgiveness, and family solidarity.
