In prehistoric times, music was considered to have magical qualities, facilitating communication with the gods, and capable of driving away evil forces. Music was used to induce altered states of consciousness in an attempt to realize in oneself and awaken in others (and in nature) the God-consciousness which pervades all life. According to some theorists . . . music is based on notational structures which reflect the fundamental design of nature itself.
