God establishes His beachhead in our most unsuspecting moments, almost in secret, without our being consciously aware of Him. He comes as a sudden thought that springs into the mind, an intense desire that moves the will. His entrance is imperceptible; in the beginning, we do not know that it is He. We do not resist Him, for we have no sense of an alien interference. We may even think that the sudden upsurge of our spirit is our own, with no suspicion that it comes from God — just as we may think that our eyes do all the seeing, without being conscious of their reliance on the sun. It is only later that we understand, looking back, that the initiative was Divine and Eternal.
